- 98 -In January 1999, Vice-president Bai Tong-Shuo came to MU to pay a courtesyvisit to President Futagami, Dean Hasegawa of the Faculty of Technology, DeanFukuhara of the Faculty of Agriculture, and Dean Kusano of the Faculty ofEducation and talked about the exchange between two institutions. Then inDecember of the same year, President Futagami went to SJTU with ProfessorShima, Professor Ishizuka and Mr.Iwakiri, Chief of the General Affairs Sectionand signed an exchange agreement. The exchange started in April 2000, whena student of the Faculty of Technology MU was sent to SJTU.Shanghai Jiao Tong UniversitySJTU, as one of the oldest universities in China, was founded in Shanghai in 1896. In1982, it became a national university which belonged directly to the Education Section ofthe State Council of People’s Republic of China. This is one of the important universitiesin China. It is strong in science and engineering fields. It is a highly-selective university,following Quing Hua University and Bei Jing University. It has 30 faculties, includingShipping・Oceanics, Energy engineering, Electoric data processing, Agriculture, Phamacy,Chemistry・Applied chemistry, Foreign language, Physical education, etc. The number ofundergraduate students is 18,000. It has graduate schools of management engineering,precision instruments and machines, Communication and Information System, etc. Thenumber of graduate students is 4,000. There are 3,000 teachers and officials.(ⅱ) Before and after the exchange agreement(★Information on the exchange activities with SJTU [especially concerning Faculty ofAgriculture, MU] was offered by Mr.Masateru Nagata, a professor emeritus of MU,who was deeply involved in this program when he was working at the Faculty ofAgriculture.)After Mr.Cao Qi-Xin finished the doctor’s course of the combined graduateschool of agriculture of Kagoshima University in March 1997 under theguidance of Professor Masateru Nagata, he got a position of an associateprofessor at the Robot Research Center of SJTU. MU took the opportunityto start the academic exchange with SJTU in earnest, with Professor Nagataplaying a pivotal role. At that time, five teachers and officials at SJTU wereformer researchers or students at MU. As SJTU admitted that they wereplaying active parts at SJTU, the relation between two institutions grew upsmoothly in every aspect because of the close and good human relationship.In 2000, the year after the conclusion of the agreement, Professor Nagatagot a JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization) grant for a follow-upproject for foreign students and supported Associate professor Cao Qi-Xin bysending him some apparatus and materials for research, including acomputer and a camera.In 2001, Mr.Ryusuke Nakajima, a student of the graduate school of
