a-history-of-international-exchanges00

- 100 -The academic and student exchange in the fields of agriculture, engineering and medicine with SJTU, one of the leading universities inChina, will surely bring MU a great merit. The relation is expected tocontinue and develop furthermore.<Reminiscence (23) ~Recollections of SJTU~>By Ryusuke Nakajima (2001~2002)[A graduate student in the Master’s course of Agriculture]SJTU is one of the most famous universities of science and engineering, which hasproduced many celebrated figures such as Jiang Ze-Min, a former Chairman ofChina(1993~2003). As the university is located in Shanghai, the commercial capital ofChina, many enterprises in and out of the country use the university as the place for jointresearch. Now many enterprises from many countries, including some Japanese ones, have their branches in and around Shanghai-shi. The university seems to offer a place forindustry and university cooperation. I studied in the Robot Research Center. The center isdivided into many sections, depending on what kind of robots they are making: a soccerrobot, a flute-playing robot, a robot for explosive ordnance disposal, a robot forextinguishing a fire, and many other robots. I did research on a robot in the agriculturalmachine field, as I am an agricultural machinery major. I tried to construct a system tosort fruit and vegetables. It is common in Japan to use a machine to sort fruit andvegetables, while in China the sorting is done by hands because of its different way ofselling. Therefore, the sorting machines were not widely used. But recently somecompanies need the machine to standardize the sizes of fruit and vegetables, as they aregoing to export high-quality products. I built software for sorting fruit and vegetables withthe help of Mr.Zhu, my joint researcher. As Mr.Zhu was a student of Faculty ofTechnology, he was not so strong in the agriculture field, while I did not have computerprogramming skills. We succeeded in constructing a software, helping each other. Withthe software it is now possible to sort tomatoes, by size, shape, and bruise. I am glad thatthe result of my research remained.A one-year stay at SJTU made it possible for me not only to acquire technical skills, but also to improve my Chinese language abilities. In addition, I could make friends withmany Chinese students, foreign students, and Japanese students. I would like to thankmy advisor, Professor Nagata for giving me a chance to study at SJTU, and officials incharge for taking care of me and Professor Cao Qi-Xin for every help he gave me.
