a-history-of-international-exchanges00

- 6 -Almost all the students from Japan, including Mayumi Oshikawa, weretaken care of by Mr.Graham Lloyd who still lives in London. He supported thestudents financially and mentally, who came to England from all over Japan.Mrs. Mayumi Lloyd (nee Oshikawa) told me that he is still exchanging letters ore-mails with some of those former students. Thanks to his help,we didn’t need to worryabout the students wewere going to send toEngland. As you knownow, Graham marriedMayumi Oshikawa, ourfirst foreign student inEngland in 1981! In 1979 when Ms.Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister of UK, shedecided to charge tuition fees to foreign students except those from the BritishCommonwealth of Nations. Consequently, we decided to stop sending ourstudents to England, and we needed to find universities in English-speakingcountries appropriate for MU students. This time we counted on Mr.Butterworth again, who was successful in finding a good university in Americaby using his information network and personal connection.(3) Sending students at their own expense to San Diego State UniversityMU concluded that the rise of the tuition fees of British universities would surelyimpose a financial burden on the students’ families. While we continued to send twomore students (from 1979 to 1981) to Lancaster University, we started looking for anew university where we could send our students. Mr.Butterworth picked SanDiego State University as a good place for MU students in terms of their family’sfinance and their English abilities. From 1980, one student each academic year wassent there with the Mombusho scholarship for the students in the teacher traininguniversities or faculties. The mere presence of Mr. Butterworth’s Japanese-American frineds, Mr. & Mrs. Ueda, made our students feel confident. But as SanDiego State University is a huge university, our students sometimes feltuncomfortable. We stopped sending our students to San Diego in 1983.
