- 128 -*Seven of those Area Culture Studies Division students experienced a shorttermstudy abroad. Then some of them went abroad to study for one year.*This meeting was not compulsory for the students, and any students werewelcomed. The office was known as ‘Dining Hall Hirase’ to foreign andJapanese students of other Faculties. As more and more ‘customers’ came tothe restaurant, we had difficulty in finding a space for them. At one time wewent all the way to Heiwa-dai Park to have a farewell lunch for those whowere going to leave Miyazaki.*In Hirase Note (No.1~No.4), where foreign students wrote their messages justbefore they went back to their home countries, many of them wrote such goodmemories about the lunchtime meeting as follows: ‘The lunchtime meetingwhere I had with many friends was really fun,’ ‘I’ll never forget the pleasanttime spent with many friends, chatting, consulting about their troubles overlunch,’ ‘I was happy about meeting my friends every week. I felt the lunchtasted better than usual,’ ‘I was looking forward to the lunchtime day, everyFriday,’ or ‘It was good for me to get to know Mr. X (a Japanese student) inRestaurant Hirase.’ Regretfully the restaurant had to be closed in March2012, when the owner of the restaurant retired from MU. And tears were shed!*The foreign students are required to write their messages both in Japaneseand in their native language. They drew pictures beautifully and sometimesput a coin of their country to ask me to call them when I visit them in theircountries. Four volumes of ‘Hirase Note’ are my treasure and make itpossible for me to contact them after they went back to their countries.
