Thisis a part of California State University, with the largest number of students of 34,500(as of2006). It is a large-scale university which confers Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoraldegrees in 151 academic fields.<Reminiscence (2) ~Good days at San Diego State University~>*Tomoko Hidaka(1980-1981)[now living in Tokyo]I studied at San Diego State University with the Mombusho scholarship. I rememberthat I considered it lucky for me that Mombusho gave the scholarship to two students ofMiyazaki University. I am sure that was the result of the teachers’ efforts. As the offer ofthe scholarship came to me suddenly when I just became a junior student, I had little timeto complete such formalities of study abroad as obtaining a visa. I managed to finish theseformalities just before I left Japan in August. After arriving in America, I stayed at theUeda’s, a good friend of Mr. Butterworth, for one week. One-week stay with the Japanese-America couple made me feel confident. San Diego State University was a mammothuniversity like Nihon University. It had a lot offoreign students, so it did not give us any specialtreatment. In addition, as there lived many Japanese-American people in California, there was no specialtreatment for the students from Japan. That wasrather good for me. I could directly feel the ‘meltingpot,’ with the refugees from Veitnam, Arabian-Americans, the students from Arabian countries,Chinese Americans, the students from Japan, Afro-Americans, Whites, Mexicans, Japanese-Americansand many others. I learned a lot about the Englishlanguage and the difference of sense of value betweenJapan and America in those ten months.
