University-wide International Exchanges(1) Japanese language education at MUJapanese language education at MU can be divided into three periods from1987, when the Faculty of Education first accepted the exchange students fromTESC and DCE, to 2012:[Period Ⅰ(1987~1988)]: Japanese language education only for the exchangestudents of Faculty of Education.[Period Ⅱ(1988~1991)]: Japanese language education for all the foreignstudents of MU after the completion of the universityto Kibana.[Period Ⅲ(1991~)]: Formal Japanese language education after the arrival of afull-time Japanese language teacher.(ⅰ) PeriodⅠ (1987～1988）*From October of 1987, the Faculty of Education accepted two exchangestudents from sister colleges in English-speaking countries, TESC (U.S.A.)and DCE (NZ). They studied at MU for one academic year with aMombusho scholarship ‘Japanese Studies.’*As there were no courses of Japanese language and culture, it wasnecessary for the Faculty of Education to set up these courses and ask someteachers to teach these courses. As it was the first academic year for theFaculty of Education to accept the exchange students, the courses were notnecessarily satisfactory because of inexperience and short of preparationfor the courses.*Japanese language and culture education courses were given under thefollowing system:【Japanese Language】・’Japanese language Ⅰ(speaking・listening)’ by two teachers of English・’Japanese language Ⅱ(reading)’ by two teachers of English・’Japanese language Ⅲ(writing)’ by four teachers of Japanese【Japanese Culture】・’Japanese Culture I’(History・Politics・Economics・Law・Geography・Education)・’Japanese Culture II’(Arts・Theory of Japanese People and Culture・Science・Literature)
