- 10 -The Evergreen State College (USA)It is a four-year general education state college located in Olympia, Capital city ofWashington State. It was established in 1971 with a revolutionary philosophy, byintroducing the interdisciplinary education system, without the framework of colleges ormajor fields. The extensivecampus surrounded withwoods creates a free and easyatmosphere. It takes aboutan hour by car to go to Seattle, where you can enjoy thecultures and arts of the city.TESC forms ‘the learningcommunity’ with about 4,000students, 170 teachers, and400 staff members. It is alsothe place for ‘lifelong learning’with 20 ~25% of ‘nontraditionalstudents,’ who areabove the age of 25.(ⅱ) Before the conclusion of an exchange agreement* From MU to TESC without a sholarshipWith the course of things mentioned above, Yuichi Watanabe (a sophomoreof English Department) was accepted to TESC for one academic year fromOctober 1982. After him, four MU students (all from English Department)studied at TESC at their own expense.1 Yuichi Watanabe 1982-1983 4 Takako Nishimuta 1985-19862 Naoko Yunoki 1983-1984 5 Ikuko Yamamoto 1986-19873 Hironobu Tomitaka 1984-1985Until 1986, when the Student Exchange Agreement was concluded, MUstudents had to pay all the expenses, including a tuition fee and livingexpenses. We can easily guess that the financial burden of their families wasextremely heavy. It was only after the item of tuition waiver was specified inthe Student Exchange Agreement when the financial burden was reduced.* Study and Training of TESC students in MiyazakiAs a part of the class ‘Japan Today’ of Professor Setsuko Tsutsumi(Japanese language and culture), seven TESC students stayed in Miyazakifor one month from July to August 1986 and studied Japanese (Miyazaki)culture.
