In 2008, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science andTechnology announced a plan to increase the number of international students to 300,000by 2020. The number of international students reached 337,000 at the end of 2018, andthe number continues to increase along with the overall increase in foreign residents.International students from China, South Korea, and Taiwan had occupied the majorityat the beginning when the government planned the increase of international students.Recently, students from Asian countries with diverse religions and cultures are increasing, and they continue to increase. Under such circumstances, universities need to activelycarry out the exchanges between international and Japanese students, and realize amulticultural society. In addition to this, universities guarantee the quality of educationfor international students with the viewpoint of increasing the number of students frommany countries. This booklet describes the history of international exchange at the University ofMiyazaki from 1974 to 2012. Nowadays, researchers and students often travel abroad forresearch and educational purposes. Overseas travel in the 1970s was not easy in variousways, but since then the amount of overseas travel has continued to increase. This bookletlooks back on the history of international exchange at our university, describing the manyefforts made by those who laid the foundation for international exchange at the Universityof Miyazaki.People, goods, and money easily cross national borders, and a multicultural society isessential for expanding sustainable international relations. In the course of expandinginternational exchange, there are various encounters, exchanges, friendships, and learningopportunities. We hope that this booklet will reaffirm the history of internationalexchange at the University of Miyazaki, and lead to the next leap forward, in line withour university slogan: Look at the world, start with the community. Finally, let me take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to ProfessorKiyoshi Hirase, the former chairman of the Faculty of Education’s International ExchangeCommittee, who for many years played the leading role in fostering internationalexchange at the University of Miyazaki and also contributed to the creation of ”A Historyof International Exchanges”.
