a-history-of-international-exchanges00

- 13 -* For 29 years (1982-2011), MU sent 47 students to TESC (8 male students +39 female students).*Ikuko Yamamoto could have a chance to study at TESC in two consequtiveyears (1986-87, 1987-88) because there was no one in 1987 who wanted tostudy at TESC. She could get a TESC diploma by studying there for two years.*The lowest TOEFL score TESC required MU students to get was/is 525.Therefore, most of those who could study at TESC were the students of theEnglish Department at the beginning.*But after the new course ‘Humanities and Social Science’ was established inApril 1989, some students from this course, especially those who major inEuropean-American culture, started to study at sister colleges in America(TESC) or in New Zealand (Dunedin College of Education). From 1989 to2000, only four of the exchange students to TESC were those from this course. But from 2000 to 2012, the English Department students (9) and those fromthis course (8) divided the number almost equally.*Though MU students could have a tuition waiver, they had to pay all the livingexpenses. Fortunately Naoko Yunoki (1983-84) and those after her obtaineda Mombusho scholarship, so the financial burden of their families was reduced. As Mombusho gave only one scholarship for one academic year, when therewere two students, one went with a scholarship and the other without ascholarship. We felt this was unfair. But Mombusho exceptionally gave MUtwo scholarships a year in the academic years of 1991-92, 1992-93, and 1994-95.*One third of the 45 former students who studied at TESC are English teachersat junior and senior high schools in Miyazaki Prefecture. The rest include ahigh school English teacher in Kagoshima Prefecture and a lecturer at a juniorcollege in Shizuoka. There are some who put their knowledge of English touse in their work, such as the ticket reservation office of United Airlines inTokyo.*Two pairs of sisters studied at TESC:・Sachie Koganemaru (1989-90) & Eiko Koganemaru (1993-94)・Remi Takamori (2001-02) & Rina Takamori (2002-03)*Three married couples came out of this exchange program:・Ward Kranz (1987-88)[remarried] and Kayoko Kushima (1988-89)・Robert Tate (1989-90) and Ellen Lambert (1988-89)[remarried]・Kevin Cretin (1993-94) and Saori Yoda (1991-92)
