As there were no other Japanese students,Evergreen was a good place where I could concentrate on studying andcould improve my English abilities.Mr. Hiro Kawasaki and Mr. Don Chalmers helped me a lot. Afterhelping Hiro-san with gardening, I was served with delicious Japanesedishes cooked by Hiro-san. Don was a ‘karate’ companion. Chris Carlin who was in chargeof the student exchange program let me take his Core Program “Paradox and Progress”,even though many students were already on the waiting list. I must thank my parents forsupporting me financially. I think that one-year stay at Evergreen made me what I amtoday.*Kayo Yamazaki(1990-1991)I remember that I spent much time in reading many books, writingessays and studying at the library until late at night. I visited theLearning Resource Center frequently to have my English sentenceschecked by my tutor. It was a tough, but a well-filled time. I wasstrongly influenced by the sense of value of minority people. Theproblems of race, sex, gay, homosexual deepened my undedstandingof human nature. I took classes of story-telling and vocal music. Ialso joined a softball club. I could have a valuable experience ofmeeting with people, young and old of both sexes.
