- 17 -*Considering the Japanese language abilities of the exchange students fromEvergreen and Dunedin (New Zealand), it was difficult for them to join theregular classes given all in Japanese. In addition, as there were no Japaneselanguage classes, the Faculty needed to draw up a special curriculum. Itconsisted of two main parts: (a) the Japanese language taught by teachers ofEnglish and Japanese Department; (b) the Japanese culture taught mainlyby some teachers who can useEnglish. In 1992, a full-timeJapanese language teacher, Mr.Yasukuni Takano, took up his newposition in the Faculty ofEducation. After Mr. Takanomoved to Nagasaki University in2003, Mr. Kazuhiko Nagatomostarted teaching the Japanese language classes at MU. This was how the Japanese languageteaching system was established at MU. (for more details, see pp.132~138)The exchange students usually joined one or two classes of practical skills, such as Ceramics, PE, and Cooking, where the language abilities were not asimportant.*To facilitate the Japanese language study of exchange students, SupportCommittee presented them with about 60 books, including Kojiki, Bocchan,Zen, Rasho-mon with some English versions as a part of the study support inApril 1991. Every year after that, the Support Committee appropriated 100to 200 thousand yen for the study support.*It was sometimes difficult to look for an apartment for exchange students.Because of the Japanese special custom of housing (a deposit + a fee), theyneeded to pay much money at the beginning of their arrival. In some cases,Support Committee had to lend money secretly to them.*In July 1992, the University International House was established on campus. As the deadline of application was June, SEC submitted the applicationdocuments in place for exchange students, who were supposed to come toMiyazaki in October.*University International House saved us the trouble of looking for apartments. As it was safer, with a lower rent, it helped exchange students and SECmembers a lot.
