- 19 -② Faculty exchange <Mutual visits>From 1982, when MU started sending a student to TESC, until 2011, thetwo institutions exchanged about 90 students. This exchange programachieved a brilliant success. MU and TESC also exchanged many facultymembers, who visited each other for courtesy visits, talks about the exchangeprogram, renewal of the exchange agreement, joint research, symposiums andmany other purposes. The following is the chronological records of mutualvisits:*1982: Professor Richard Alexander, one of the TESC founding fathers, visitedone of his former students living in Miyazaki.*July 1987: Academic Dean Barbara Smith gavea speech at MU with the title of “TheEvergreen State College---A newchallenge of college education” (Thecollege doesn’t matter whether it’s oldor new. A mammoth university doesno longer play its role.).*September 1988: Dean Torao Kitamura and President Joe Olander met inTokyo to talk about the faculty exchange.*Summer vacations in 1988, 1990, 1991: Guy Butterworth visited TESC to talkabout the student exchange program.*March 1993: Kiyoshi Hirase, Chairman of the SEC of Faculty of Education,MU, paid a courtesy visit to TESC.*March 1994: Guy Butterworth visited TESC.*October 1994: Dean Nichiro Kawano and Kiyoshi Hirase visited TESC to talkabout the joint research between MU and TESC. (See moredetails about the joint research at pp.100~103)*November 1996: Provost Barbara Smith and Academic Dean Susan Fiksdalvisited MU to give a speech on TESC education system andto do research with MU partners.*December 1996: Katsuhiko Kusano, Head of the Life-long Learning Center ofMU, visited TESC with Kiyoshi Hirase.
