a-history-of-international-exchanges00

- 26 -speeches to the audience.I remember meeting Dean Nichiro Kawano and Katsuhiko Kusano andhaving extended discussions about the student-centered pedagogy atEvergreen. I met them both again when I was invited by Mr. Hirase to visitthe university while I was teaching on the exchange program in Kobe, at theUniversity of Hyogo. My husband again accompanied me, and I met with Mr.Kawano again at his home, because he had retired. It was such a pleasure tomeet again in spring, 2007.In that first visit of 1996, I was surprised thatthe Koganemaru family owned a hotel and gaveus “Western-style” rooms there. It was awonderful hotel, and the whole family offered usgracious hospitality. We met Sachie and Eiko’sgrandmother on our way to the bath in ouryukatas. She laughed and laughed because myhusband’s was far too short. She made him one, stitched by hand that very day! She and hergranddaughters also showed me many kimonos, and suddenly, one that I had tried on was mine! These are precious gifts that we will keep always.I cannot leave this topic of hospitality without mentioning the fabulousbanquets prepared in our honor. We took pictures of so many amazing dishes, including a snapper (tai) whose scales were sashimi. Such artistry! We alsolearned that one always refills the glass of the neighboring person and theydo likewise. I had to watch my glass so that I did not unintentionally drinktoo much! Our friendship with Mr. Hirase has been crucial to the exchange programand current discussions about how to continue student and faculty exchanges. They have changed so many lives for the better and given participants an indepthknowledge of Japan and its rich cultural traditions. Mr. Hirase spenthis sabbatical at Evergreen (1997-98), and even attended my family’straditional 4th of July reunion which we celebrate with lots of barbecue andeveryone brings other dishes to share (a potluck). He stayed for long walks onthe beach and fireworks.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
