As the firstcandidate student declined the offer, DCE had torecruit the applicants and do the selection again.Five students applied for the Mombusho scholarship(Japanese studies) and only Elizabeth Tate could getone. Four applicants decided not to come to Miyazakifor financial reasons. That was how Elizabeth Tatecame to Miyazaki as the first exchange student from DCE. *In the second year (1988), DCE recommended Jane Barton and Gillian Wilsonfor the Mombusho scholarship applicants, considering that the Japaneselanguage of the most likely candidate had hardly improved. Mombusho gaveMU only one scholarship, which was awarded to Jane Barton. Gillian Wilsongave up coming to Miyazaki this year and came with the scholarship the nextyear (1989). DCE had some students who were interested in coming to Miyazaki.But as we could get only one Mombusho scholarship a year, only the firstcandidate could come to Miyazaki and those who could not get the scholarshipdecided not to come for financial reasons.*The exchange students from Dunedin positively participated in various eventsin and out of campus together with foreign students from other countries, such
