- 33 -<Reminiscence (10) ~Japanese Experiences by Kiwi girls~>*Elizabeth Tate(1987-88)On the second day in Miyazaki, I had to go to the university to meet my advisor,Mr.Yoshida (Psychology). I decided to walk because it was a fine and warm day. My stayingplace was along the Oyodo river (Mr. Butterworth’s house) and it was rather far from theuniversity. I didn’t care. I started walking toward the university with a map and anumbrella. I walked at a leisurely pace, as everything I saw on the way, including people, shops, and cars, interested me so much. When I arrived at the university, I found out thatMr. Yoshida told three of his students to look for me because he thought I got lost on theway. It took two and a half hours. They were really surprised to know that I walked to theuniversity. I cannot understand why they were so surprised. It is common to walk in NewZealand. I still cannot understand why kids stare at me surprisingly and shout out,“Gaijin!”[First experience in Miyazaki (A report of her study and life in Miyazaki)(Feb. 25, 1988)]*Gillian Wilson(1989-90)
