- 33 -<Reminiscence (10) ~Japanese Experiences by Kiwi girls~>*Elizabeth Tate(1987-88)On the second day in Miyazaki, I had to go to the university to meet my advisor,Mr.Yoshida (Psychology). I decided to walk because it was a fine and warm day. My stayingplace was along the Oyodo river (Mr. Butterworth’s house) and it was rather far from theuniversity. I didn’t care. I started walking toward the university with a map and anumbrella. I walked at a leisurely pace, as everything I saw on the way, including people, shops, and cars, interested me so much. When I arrived at the university, I found out thatMr. Yoshida told three of his students to look for me because he thought I got lost on theway. It took two and a half hours. They were really surprised to know that I walked to theuniversity. I cannot understand why they were so surprised. It is common to walk in NewZealand. I still cannot understand why kids stare at me surprisingly and shout out,“Gaijin!”[First experience in Miyazaki (A report of her study and life in Miyazaki)(Feb. 25, 1988)]*Gillian Wilson(1989-90):The town is very beautiful with the Washington palms along thestreets. The weather is mild.:I like tempura and sushi. I also like Hyuga-natsu (citron). I likecooking and I sometimes try to cook sukiyaki. In New Zealand,Japan is known for its industrial products such as cars and stereos.I now learn karate (twice a week) and ikebana (once a week).I go back to Dunedin College of Education and study to become an elementary schoolteacher. [City Bulletin Miyazaki May 1990 (an interview)]*Carla Maydon(1992-93)It is warm in winter here in Miyazaki. As Dunedin is located inthe South Island, it is cold and snowy. I enjoyed Japanese New Yearholidays by paying the first visit to the shrine, and eating o-mochi(rice cakes). In New Zealand, Christmas is the most importantannual event, while in Japan Shogatsu is. I miss the Christmasparties with many friends. I got a little homesick. I can write allhiraganas and katakanas. I’m now learning kanjis. I want to reada newspaper as soon as possible. I also want to travel around inJapan. I’m deeply interested in shrines, so I want to go to as manyshrines as possible and meet people there. That will help me to imrpove my Japaneselanguage. In the future I want to become a teacher of Japanese language at an elementaryschool or a high school. [City Bulletin Miyazaki February 1993]① A short-term study programFrom September 1 to 4, 2001, Mr. Minoru Okabayashi, Chairman of thePlanning Committee of MU and Kiyoshi Hirase, Chairman of the SEC of theFaculty of Education and Culture, visited DCE to talk with Mr. David Keen, professor of sociology and Ms. Erica Allen, an official in charge of the exchangeprograms, about the possibility of organizing a short-term (about 10 days)
