main, I doubt if many (any?) students moving in either direction ever hadtruly bad experiences. Indeed, bicultural pairings eventually occurred inmore than one instance, and friendships, which I hope remain strong,flourished. Foreign students did sometimes stay or return to Japan or endedup working in international positions. We, and certainly I, never could haveimagined even one of the connections that the exchange produced.When Katy and I left, with tears hardly avoided in the departure loungeof the Miyazaki Airport, the university gave me an honorary degree. I willnot return it no matter what I think about my not deserving it. I think I canstill see so very clearly many experiences about Miyazaki and Miyadai in mymind’s eye no matter what Michael Korda believes, from things as simple asa frigid jockey of draft Sapporo and a plate or two of “edamame” (boiledgreen soy beans) in the rooftop beer garden of a riverside hotel on a warmsummer night to a finely turned out graduation essay or a graduate whomanaged later to use the overseas experience as a stepping stone to importantwork.
