- 56 -*Every year after the general meeting, the SC Newsletter was sent to all theoff-campus members, together with a postal money order form and a letterof request for payment of the annual membership fee. The membershipfees of the teachers were paid from their salaries according to eachteacher’s declaration of the amount of membership fee of the year.*The role of the SC in the exchange programs with TESC and DCE shouldbe highly evaluated, especially at the beginning of the programs. The SCwas absolutely indispensable for the international exchanges of the Faculty, not only at the time of its establishment, but also at the present time.*On March 5, 2011, the SC celebrated the 25th Anniversary of itsestablishment at the multipurpose hall of the university co-op building. The symposium, “The international exchanges of Faculty of Education andCulture: its past, present, and future” was held. Mr. Butterworth wasinvited with his wife nine years after he went back to America. Manypeople came together, including successive Deans of the Faculty, formerand present SEC members, teachers of the Faculty, out-of-campus SCmembers, former exchange students from MU, and many friends of Mr.Butterworth’s. After the opening speech by Dean Kodama, Mr.Butterworth gave a keynote address, “The beginning of internationalexchanges,” in which he told the story of hislabor when he sent MU students to England. Then four former students who studied abroadtalked briefly about their experiences:Mutsuko Kawano (nee Myosei) [LancasterUniversity], Koichi Wakamatsu [San DiegoState University], Naoko Yunoki and HironobuTomitaka [TESC]. At the end, Mr. Hirase,Chairman of SEC, and Mr. Nagatomo, an SEC member, gave a short report of the present situation and the prospectfor the future of international exchanges of the Faculty.*At the buffet party, many participants renewed their friendship and talkedabout stories of their past. At the end of the party, former President of theSC, Mr. Nichiro Kawano, gave a wonderful speech in English and gave threezodiac figurines of the year (rabbit) to Mr. Butterworth as a present.*The history of the SC is described in detail in the booklet, A History of 25years, which was distributed to the participants on that day.
