He sentan e-mail to Mr.Hirase, Chairman of SEC, Faculty of Education and Culture,about the possibility of exchange of MU with SU, while he was giving anintensive course there:“…I’m writing you, as I have something I want you to do about the studentexchange. I’m thinking of establishing a student exchange relationshipbetween MU (Faculty of Education and Culture) and SU (Faculty of ForeignLanguage). I’ve already had a talk with Vice-president. …Both theChairman of the department and Vice-president of SU are deeply interestedin the student exchange with MU, so if MU shows an interest in the studentexchange, it will be realized. As there are no Faculty of Medicine, Facultyof Agriculture, and Faculty of Technology in SU, it is good to have therelation between Faculty of Education and Culture, MU and Faculty ofForeign Language, SU….”(received on December 19, 2003)Mr.Nagatomo asked us to send him the photocopies of the exchangeagreement with other universities, while he sent us some information on SU(The Outline of Soochow University and DVD). On January 15, 2004, SU sentus the draft of ‘Student exchange agreement between MU and SU’ (Chineseversion) and asked MU SEC to examine it. The draft written in Chinese wasimmediately translated into Japanese by Ms.Kumiko Fujii (MU teacher ofChinese language). On January 22, Dean Iwamoto, Mr.Iwakiri, a secretarygeneral of the Faculty, Mr.Nagataomo who came back from Taiwan, andMr.Hirase, Chairman of SEC, came together to have a discussion and decided tohave an exchange agreement with SU. In the meeting on January 26, SECconfirmed that it would start the office work toward the conclusion of anexchange agreement.(ⅱ) The conclusion of an exchnage agreement (2004)SEC examined the contents of the agreement item by item in severalmeetings in February. Who would sign the agreement was the next matter tobe decided. Mr.Toshihiko Kawakami, Head of the Research Cooperationsection of MU advised that the Presidents of MU and SU, and Deans of theFaculty of Education and Culture, MU and Faculty of Foreign Language, SUshould sign. He also advised that it was good to start the student exchange onthe faculty level, and then gradually extend to the university level.
