a-history-of-international-exchanges00

- 73 -carried out with any other university than Miyazaki University. I think this couldbe made possible with the efforts and the devotion of many Miyazaki Universityteachers, especially Professors Kazuhiko Nagatomo and Kiyoshi Hirase. Accordingto my narrow view, there were many personal academic exchanges among theuniversity teachers by the end of 20th century, but there seemed to be only a fewacademic exchanges between the teachers at a private university in Taiwan andthose at a national university in Japan. Therefore, the academic exchangesbetween Soochow University and Miyazaki University can be considered anexceptional case.Since the conclusion of the academic agreement in 2004, we have performed manyexchange activities closely together with Miyazaki University, including long-termand short-term student exchange programs, practice teachings, joint meetings of theinterim report of Master’s theses, international symposiums of ‘MultilingualLanguage Learning Support,’ forums on Japanese Language Support, the MiyazakiUniversity Reunion in Taiwan and the presentation contest of Miyazaki sightseeingexperience plans. Through an introduction by the teachers of Miyazaki University,Soochow University teachers could have opportunities for academic exchanges withthe teachers of Japanese language in Korea, China and Indonesia. The idea of‘Multilingual Language Learning Support,’ introduced by Professor KazuhikoNagatomo, has spread all over Taiwan and made a strong impact on the teachers ofJapanese language in this country. In the age of ‘globalization’ and ‘glocalization,’there are many things we can learn from the island country Japan, as well manyTaiwan things we want to introduce to you. I hope we can afford more opportunitiesfor young people of both countries to participate in exchanges.I would like to express mygratitude to the teachers of MiyazakiUniversity for giving usopportunities to have internationalexchanges. I would also like tocongratulate Miyazaki University forpublishing the English version of AHistory of International Exchanges.I hope that Miyazaki University willgo from strength to strength.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
