- 85 -(ⅱ) The contents of the exchange① Student exchange(a) Long-term student exchange*The number of students exchanged in a long-term program was ratherunbalanced from 1994 to 2010. SNU usually sent three to four studentsa year, while MU sent one student a year.・From MU to SNU: 6・From SNU to MU: 42*The first three exchange students of SNU came to MU in 1994.*The first exchange student from MU was Shin’ichiro Kadota (Graduateschool of Technology) in 1997.*The first exchange student from Faculty of Education was MinakoMatsumoto (a junior student of English Department) in 1998.＜Reminiscence (19) ～An Unhappy Incident～＞An exchange student from SNU, Kim, Young-Chul (2001~2001), participated in the‘International Cultural Exchange by Young People’ held in Kijo-cho in August, sponsoredby Kijo Ehon no Sato (literally ‘Village of Picture Books’). After the event, he was enjoyingswimming in the River Omaru and drowned in the river. It was a sad incident. In Miyazaki,about 200 people concerned came together to offer condolences to him in a meeting ofparting. What happened after that was described in the report (publicized on August 26,2002) by Mr.Minoru Okabayashi (Chairman of International Exchange Committee of MU)who attended the funeral for Kim, Young-Chul with his ashes to his hometown Chungjusi:‘On August 22, Professor Jang, Seok-Mo, Professor Park, Yun-Ho, Ikutomo Kuroki, therepresentative of Ehon no Sato, and Okabayashi left for Fukuoka in the evening withthe ashes and a photograph of Kim, Young-Chul, given a send-off by Vice-presidentKawachi, Dean Iwamoto of the Faculty of Education and Culture, many foreign studentsstudying at MU, and people of Eho no Sato. We stayed overnight in Fukuoka and nextday we arrived at Inchon Airport. At the airport, we were welcomed by Kim’s parents,his relatives, the teachers and students of SNU. Four of us with Kim’s ashesaccompanied by SNU people stood in a line in front of Kim’s father, Kim, Nan-Yeonwearing a pair of white glove and handed the ashes to him. Two students also wearing apair of white glove carried the ashes and the photogragh to the funeral hall. At theairport, we could hear the loud lamentation of his mother through the door of theImmigration Office, and her lament reached the peak when we stood in front of therelatives. She broked down crying on the floor and could not stand up in spite of thehelping hands from several people. I heard later that she was carried by an ambulanceto a hospital and couldn’t attend the funeral. …At the end, I want to write that we didn’thave any trouble because SNU-related people mediated between us and the Kimrelatives. SNU Preseident Hun, Sang-Man gave MU a special address of gratitude forits efforts to respond quickly to the incident, to give the exact explanation of the incident,and to procure the related documents and the photos of the meeting of parting.’＊Even after this sad incident, the two institutions still keep a good relation since then,thanks to the quick response by the MU people concerned.＊Ms.Lee, Kyung-Won, a teacher of Home Economics of Faculty of Education, MU, playedan very important role as an interpreter. She helped us a lot to avoid misunderstandingKorean culture.
