Features of the Department

The Department of Applied Biological Science aims to train advanced technical specialists who can attain understanding of the various functions involving animals and plants, micro organisms and aquatic organisms, and based upon such expertise, can contribute to the tasks of producing food, energy and a cleaner environment, which is of great importance to both local and global societies. Therefore, our department provides the education and research needed for clearly understanding the potential functions of micro organisms, decomposition of environmental pollutants and biomass conversion in local communities to produce useful materials.

The department and program also provide the education and research regarding the development of an assessment system for functions involving animals, plants and food, in addition to a functional materials searching system.

Furthermore, it provides the education and research relating to the development of functional aquatic food products and the search for highly functional materials; the preservation and resource management of coastal ecology unique to warm climates; the appropriate resource control and advanced technology for aquaculture and stock enhancement balancing preservation of ecology of coastal areas, and the efficient production of aquatic organisms for effective utilization of coastal organisms.

In particular, our department provides comprehensive education and research integrating agriculture and engineering for the functional clarification of local biomass by microbiology, enzyme engineering and fermentation engineering and the development of its utilization. In addition it focuses on the development of environmental preservation technology by utilizing animals, plants and micro organisms, improvement of diet integrating genetic analysis and biological information engineering and the development of new healthy foods and medicines. The aim is to train human resource personnel who can respond to the needs of local communities and various globally pertinent tasks.

3.Course of Bioscience and Biotechnology

Education and Research Contents

The Course entitled gBioscience and Biotechnologyhcomprehensively focuses on food, health, biological resources and the environment by utilizing the biological functions of animals, plants and micro organisms, and provides education and research on biochemistry, genetic engineering, bioengineering, food science etc. From the perspective of molecular engineering and fermentation engineering, integrating agriculture and engineering, this course also seeks to develop potential functions of micro organism and educates about the decomposition of environmental pollutants and the conversion of local biomass into useful materials. It also provides education concerning the development of an assessment system that elucidates the functions of foods in the community, in addition to a system used to search for functional materials, and promote education regarding biological adjustment systems (¶‘Ì’²®‹@\) and detoxification metabolism for the functional components in these foods at the cellular level.

4.Course of Marine Biological Science

Education and Research Contents

The Course entitled gMarine Biological Scienceh provides the education and research for deriving useful materials from aquatic organisms, the development of food, searching for and applying useful micro organisms, understanding ecology and genetic analysis of coastal organisms relating to fishery resources, and for aquaculture and stock enhancement. In this course we conduct education and research practically with the intent of being capable of responding to issues concerning coastal organisms. That being said, it is necessary to understand environmental problem, resource management, ecological preservation and food problems associated with the relationship between humans and coastal environments from the viewpoint of fishery science.
