On June 8, around 200 masks made by students at Miyazaki Daiichi Junior and Senior High School were donated to the 187 international students at the University of Miyazaki (UoM). Yuji Funaki, a second-year student at Daiichi, made the following remarks at the event held to present the handmade masks: "I heard that that some international students at the University of Miyazaki, who live near my home, were having difficulty purchasing masks and started making masks with my family members. This activity spread to include other volunteers at my school, leading up to the contribution of these masks today."

An international student at UoM from Paraguay who received one of the handmade masks expressed his gratitude at the event: "My studies at UoM came to an end in March, but I have been unable to return to my country because of the pandemic. I really love Miyazaki, with all of its kind people, and when I return home I will tell people in Paraguay about the kindness I received."

The president of UoM, Dr. Tsuyomu Ikenoue, also took part in the event, and expressed his gratitude to the Daiichi students for the masks that will be distributed to international students: "I think that the hearts of our international students will be touched by the kind contribution of the handmade masks during this stressful time, and I am sure that they will use them with care."
