In improving animal productivity in the Southern region of Kyushu which boasts of some of the biggest numbers of domesticated livestock a lot of research is being done the field of animal breeding and genetics. Some of the approaches being used include, estimation of meat production ability using ultrasound, exploring population and molecular genetics to facilitate selection of traits of economic importance. Additionally, research is being done to continuously improve the productive traits in livestock particularly cattle and pigs.
This laboratory is performing the collection, conservation and evaluation of plant genetic resources and research the evolution of grass (Gramineae) and legume (Leguminosae) forage plants by using genome analysis. Moreover, we study genome-based breeding to generate new varieties, in addition to working on the utilization of local genetic resources. On the other hand, we develop novel forage plants which have high nutritional value and high potential to mitigate the effects of environmental stresses by genetic transformation.
This laboratory cultivates human resources capable of scientific studies about food-safety and stable food supply including the research of food-borne bacteria. A research topic is the control and prevention of Escherichia coli food poisoning and this laboratory is also engaged in unraveling the molecular pathogenesis and development of detection and identification technologies of the pathogen based on the genome information.
