The Center for Animal Disease Control (CADIC), University of Miyazaki, was established in October 2011 as a unique educational and research center for livestock disease control in Japan. Since 2000, Miyazaki Prefecture, one of the leading livestock prefectures in Japan, has experienced outbreaks of the foot-and-mouth disease and the highly pathogenic avian influenza. Consequently, many livestock have been sacrificed to prevent the spread of these infectious diseases. As a response, the University of Miyazaki has prioritized the rapid development of livestock disease control systems as the most important issue in South Kyushu, which is the livestock base of Japan.

CADIC's mission:
Utilizing the experience of transboundary animal diseases and locations in one of the leading livestock prefectures, we aim to:
● Advance research in livestock infectious disease control
● Develop global human resources that can play central roles in control measures against livestock infectious diseases
● Enact regional and international collaboration for transboundary animal disease control
● Promote sustainable livestock production

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Goal 2 "Zero Hunger," aims to provide a secure and stable food supply. Infectious diseases in livestock are one of the major factors that reduce food production worldwide; therefore, advancements in disease control technology for these infectious diseases have been prioritized globally. To achieve this object, the CADIC has promoted comprehensive research for animal disease control by a multidisciplinary group of researchers. We will break away from the classical approach to disease control based on infectious disease research only. We aim to establish a new type of animal disease control system using our research results, obtained by combining a wide range of research such as basic, applied, mathematical, clinical, and field research.

The CADIC celebrates its 10th anniversary in October 2021. Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) project, titled "The Acceleration of Livestock Revolution in Thailand aiming to be the Kitchen of the World through the Development of Novel Technologies for Stable Livestock Production and Food Safety," is now in progress in Thailand. We will continue to work on solving problems at both local and international community levels through animal disease control.
