Global Issues and Background

asean

ASEAN has become a base of food production,

Thailand is expected as the leader

★Aiming to support 30% of livestock products in the world until 2050

"Kitchen of the World"

タイ
Current status and issues on the livestock industry in Thailand
  • Restriction of the livestock product-exportation by epidemics of FMD
  • Epidemics of livestock infectious diseases causing decreased productivity
  • High Contamination level of poultry meat with foodborne pathogens

ECONOMIC LOSS !!

Export restrictions of livestock resources due to the occurrence of transboundary infectious diseases→100M THB/year (352Myen / year) (Perry et al., 1999)

Bacterial food poisoning in Thailand → 200,000 people/year, medical expenses 900M THB/year (3,168M yen/year) (Treeprasertsuk et al., 2016)

Waste disposal by food poisoning bacteria contamination of the frozen chicken→1000M USD/year (119,120 million yen / year) (Sriwichailamphan, 2003)

sdg
Sustainable Development Goals for this project (SDG 2, 12, 17)
  • End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture
  • Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns
  • Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development

Why do we collaborate with THAILAND?

collaborate

1.ASEAN economy corridors opened (2015) and Epidemic prevention measures

Due to the opening of the ASEAN Economic Corridor, the distribution of livestock and livestock products within ASEAN countries (Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia) is increasing. Therefore, it is necessary to take measures to prevent the spread of infectious diseases due to the movement of livestock and livestock products in Thailand, which is located in the center of Thailand.

2.Importance in the geopolitical and economic sense of Thailand

Thailand, which has undergone significant economic development in recent decades, is the geopolitical and economic center of the Greater Mekong region (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand), and it is possible to create strategies with a link to the Thai's economy.

3.Support for foot-and-mouth disease eradication by the Thai government

Currently, foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) has not been eradicated in Thailand and its neighboring countries. Therefore, we will support the Thai government to form a free zone for FMD around Chonburi Province, which is located in the eastern part of Bangkok, and use that activity as a model for eradication FMD in ASEAN countries.
